Copenhagen Restaurants: Koan at Relæ

The Nordic-Korean fine dining restaurant is currently residing at Relæ’s old Nørrebro location. The tasting menu is a celebration of Nordic cuisine with strong Korean notes, inspired by chef Baumann’s Korean roots (he’s a Korean adoptee) and several trips to Korea. A night at Koan does not come cheap, but this is the place to go if you want to experience some of the very best that the Copenhagen fine dining scene has to offer right now.

Who should go? Foodies with an expense account. Also good for date night and special occasions.

What to order? The tasting menu is 1250DKK and the wine pairing is 1050DKK (July 2021)

Copenhagen Cafes: Polly

Polly, Copenhagen Guide

Modern bistro/cafe at a busy, but cozy, stretch of Gl. Kongevej. The owners have stated that they are out to provide no BS food, that is, no food made for the sole purpose of looking good on Instagram, but a quick glance through the menu do not reveal any larger surprises. You would probably have encountered more than a few of menu items at other places around the world, but hey, that is not necessarily a bad thing, we all love a good avo toast, don’t we?

In the evening, the bistro part takes over, and Polly offers a 7-course tasting menu for a very reasonable 425DKK (July 2021) along with a la carte dishes.

PS: Even though they are not actively trying, most of the food is in fact rather photogenic.

Polly is good for: Breakfast and brunch. The set menu is a good deal for dinner

Copenhagen: Rent a picnic boat

Rent a picnic boat, Copenhagen Guide

When the weather is nice and the sun is out, the Copenhageners are heading to the canals for some swimming and sunbathing. No doubt that the best way to see the city is from the water, and what is more fun than steering your own boat?

There are several boat rental companies in the city, but the most well-known are probably GoBoat at Islands Brygge and Teglværket (499DKK/hour, June 2021) and Friendships at Christianshavn (490DKK/hour, June 2021). The boats from both companies have electric engines, and a picnic table with room for 8 persons. No license? No problem. The boats go very slow, so the only requirement is that the person steering the boat is over the age of 18.

With the exception of the person steering the boat, you are allowed to drink alcohol on board, and encouraged to bring your own picnic basket. Remember to clean up and do not thrown waste in the water.

Copenhagen Cafes: Ipsen & Co

Ipsen & Co, Copenhagen Cafes, Copenhagen Guide

Cozy cafe with really good coffee at the very best stretch of Gl. Kongevej. The food is made in-house from organic, locally sourced ingredients and the cafe works actively on sustainability and on reducing waste. The inviting atmosphere makes you want to hang around for hours, and it often gets crowded as Ipsen & Co. is very popular among locals.

What to order? The Morgenbræt (breakfast platter) has everything you want for breakfast. For lunch, try the Kartoffelmad, a Danish open-face sandwich with potatoes and mayonnaise.

Good for: Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon coffee

Copenhagen Restaurants: Høst

Höst, Copenhagen Restaurant Guide

Modern Nordic restaurant in beautiful settings. Great for those who wants to experience modern Nordic cuisine but without the Noma price tag. Høst is part of the Cofoco (Copenhagen Food Collective) group known for monthly set menus at a fixed price. The concept is very similar to the one at the sister restaurant Vækst, so if Høst is fully booked, try calling Vækst for a table (and vice versa).

The Høst menu (3 courses) is 395DKK (June, 2021), and there is also a vegetarian set menu available at the same price. You can also order a la carte, but the set menu is a really good deal.

Copenhagen Restaurants: Vækst

Vækst, Copenhagen restaurants

Nordic restaurant with a menu heavy influenced by seasonal herbs and vegetables. Vækst is part of the Cofoco (Copenhagen Food Collective) group of restaurants, known for monthly set menus at a reasonable price. You can choose between vegetarian or non-vegetarian, and have the option of different substitutions such as cheese instead of dessert and beef tenderloin instead of the set menu main course. You can also order a la carte, but the set menu is by far the best deal. If you get the set menu expect complimentary surprise dishes and amuse bouches during the evening.
